Boy or Girl?!

Tomorrow is the big day! In less than 24 hours we should know if Baby #2 is a boy or girl! I am SO excited. I’ve wanted to know since the day I took the pregnancy test. ;)

So today I took these photos of McKenzie to announce the sex, using boy or girl newborn shoes. I’m so happy with how they turned out! Especially since I will be using these photos to announce the sex to Jon via snail mail (I finally have his address, and I was overjoyed to talk to him for 10 minutes yesterday for Easter!). Plus, I loved the pregnancy announcement photos involving McKenzie, so this was fun. I love that she gets to be a part of it. Do you like ’em? My only complaint is that the newborn shoes don’t look as little in her tiny hands! ;) Any last guesses?! Personally, I’m feeling boy since I’ve have 3 boy dreams in the past week. We shall see!BigCollage

A family of feet.

AltfeatherFBCoverPhotoI haven’t had a [paid] photo session lately…since October actually! I’ve been trying to spend as much time with my hubbs as possible before he leaves. I forgot how much I enjoy what I do! =) We took the “foot photo” at my client’s suggestion (a Pinterest inspiration), I think it was a particularly fun shot.

In other news, I’ll be 11 weeks tomorrow, and baby #2 has been giving me grief…I am so disgusted by foods I usually love. And I crave fruit. And calamari…mmmmm…I’m salivating just typing that. But to be honest, other than my intense aversions/cravings, I don’t really feel pregnant. My “bump” is a slightly more pronounced (my hubbs can tell), and thankfully I’m not as tired as I was a few weeks ago. We have the first part of our prenatal screen on Monday, with the ultrasound on March 7th…I can’t wait to see how much our dear little fetus has grown…I REALLY want to find out the sex at that appointment (if we can)! I’m dying to know.

Enjoy the rest of your weekends everyone!

9 Weeks

{{First of all, thanks to anyone who “liked” our story on the Pasta Tree’s page! They announce the winners of the Valentine’s contest tomorrow!}}

So this is my first pregnancy post. Kinda exciting! And accordingly, here is my first official “belly pic.” No belly yet, but I hear it shows more quickly with baby #2. We shall see. Personally, I think I just look bloated. And please excuse my morning hair.

Baby2-8wk4d

My BabyCenter App told me to take a “belly pic.”

In baby-related news: I had my first appointment this week Wednesday, but it was just routine background/family history. They also analyzed last week’s ultrasound, and said the baby looks great. BUT they did find a 5.5cm cyst on my left ovary. Bummer. So they’re just going to monitor that whenever I have ultrasounds.

Last March (before I started this little blog), I had another large cyst removed from my left ovary. I’d had it for several months, but it had developed walls inside (visible by ultrasound), so the doc was very concerned: it was either ovarian cancer or endometriosis. I never thought I’d find myself hoping for endometriosis. I had a laparoscopic surgery to remove it, and they found that it was a large endometrioma (blood filled cyst caused by endometriosis)…but at least it wasn’t cancer! Phew! The doctor was surprised that I wasn’t experiencing pain, because usually endometriosis is very painful…I think he secretly thought it was cancer. Not complaining here. But ultimately, I’m just glad it didn’t cause any problems with conceiving baby #2.

We have also opted for a “First Trimester Screen” for genetic testing (mainly just because I want another ultrasound so we can see “it” again). We have genetic counseling & a blood test later this month, and on March 7th we’ll get the ultrasound and the results of the bloodwork. That is right before Jon leaves for the Army, so I’m very excited he’ll be able to be there with me and see the baby again. And maybe we’ll get a sneak peek of the sex? That would be awesome. I know that the “parts” can be visible by that gestational age, but it’s still pretty early. Hopefully we’ll get lucky!

Oh, and my jeans don’t fit anymore. I’ve gained like 3 lbs…I’m 178lbs now. That’s CRAZY. That’s what I was at the END of my pregnancy with McKenzie. Fuck. I’m screwed. The joys of pregnancy! But don’t judge me, I’m tall. I am currently living in yoga pants/leggings. I was so happy to find LONG yoga pants at Costco. I always need longs. My legs are longer than my dad’s, who was 6’3″.

Other than that, I’ve been a little queasy lately. The smell of cooking hamburgers/steak almost made me lose it. I find that soda settles my stomach, so I think I’m going to pick up some sparkling water to avoid the empty calories. Also, since Jon will be in the Army, we’ll be switching insurance mid-way through the pregnancy. So that should be interesting. And who knows where we’ll be living when I deliver? Maybe here? Maybe somewhere else? That should be fun.

Did you have to deal with any cysts during pregnancy? And if you’ve had 2 children, when did you start to “show” in your 2nd?

So, will ya help us win dinner & a carriage ride for V-day?

Well, it appears pregnancy insomnia has set in early. I don’t remember having sleep issues until the 3rd trimester with McKenzie, but here I am: wide awake at 3:45am. [Insert expletives here.] What better time to clean & do a little blogging? At least I’m productive, I suppose.

Jon&Nic

Our reception at The Pasta Tree, gotta love the “clinking” glasses. ;)

ANYWAY. So, there’s this little contest going on at our favorite restaurant, The Pasta Tree, for Valentine’s Day: they’re giving away a 1-night stay at a boutique hotel in downtown Milwaukee, a horse-drawn carriage ride to/from the restaurant, and free dinner (all valued at $600). All I had to do was share our “Love Story” on their Facebook wall…how awesome would that be?!?!

Now, not only did Jon & I go on many, many dates to this incredibly romantic restaurant, but we happened to have our wedding reception there! Granted it’s an hour-and-a-half away from Madison, but it is seriously “our” place. Only 2 people have posted anything, and obviously it would mean a lot to us to win…especially with Jon leaving next month, and all that jazz. I think we have a pretty rad love story (long, blog version here), but obviously I’m a little biased. ;)

Soooooo, to anyone who reads my little blog: would you please, please take the time to “like” and/or comment on my photo-post if you have Facebook? Pretty please? It would mean a lot to me. And you don’t even need to “like” their page, just our photo. It doesn’t say anything about the most “likes” winning, but I figure it can’t hurt. =) The contest is Feb. 1st-8th, so we should know by next week! I’ll keep y’all posted, wish us luck!

Big News!!!

For those of you who haven’t already seen via Facebook…we’re expecting baby #2! I’m 7 weeks 4 days, so it’s still very early…but we had an ultrasound today and everything looked perfect, with a steady heartbeat of 167. It made it so real to see it, especially for Jon, but for me too. We’re all very excited! In the pic below, the little bean floating in the black area is the baby. The top of the little bean is the head, and the white spot is the eye. It’s measuring perfectly, so they confirmed my due date of September 15th, 2013.7wks4days

And McKenzie is over-the-moon…she is so excited to be a big sister! Every morning she asks, “Is the baby snoring?” It’s adorable. She will be 5 by the time the baby is born, so I think I’ll have a pretty awesome little helper. I’m so glad we waited longer before having a 2nd, the timing is really great for us. =)

IMG_1120bwWe had already told our families, but to make the pregnancy “public” (aka: a Facebook post), I had this photo-shoot with McKenzie in her new “Big Sister” shirt. Her bedroom walls are purple, so it worked out nicely! I like how they turned out. =) I was excited to find a cute shirt, because sometimes I think the shirts like that are a little too “kiddie” looking.

COMING.SEPT.2013

As for me, I’m feeling pretty well for the most part, just super tired. And most foods sound gross…I haven’t gotten sick, but I’m definitely queasy. I’ll wait too long to eat (until I’m overly hungry), and then nothing sounds good and my empty stomach is upset. I’ll usually just end up having a few crackers. And one night I had wicked heartburn, which I never had with McKenzie. Nothing too terrible though, it could be worse.

For those of you who are curious: yes, we plan on finding out the sex of the baby (I’m too impatient not to know!). To be honest, I’m sorta hoping for a boy because I think one of each would be pretty awesome…but hey, if it’s a girl we can reuse all McKenzie’s stuff so that would be awesome too. Either way, we were so excited to see the little heartbeat today, and we can’t wait to meet “it”!

So tell me, y’all, are 2 kiddos a lot crazier than 1? Were your 2nd pregnancies different than the first?

Back from Mexico

We got back from Mexico on Saturday and we had a great time! It had a bumpy start when my luggage was left in the US for an extra day, so I went 1 day wearing the same clothes…and we basically lost a day because the sunscreen was in my bags. *sigh* Thankfully though, my parents always told me to pack a swimsuit & other essentials in my carry on. Smart people. The first night we ventured into town and splurged on some lobster…one word: amazing. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Also, I think I mentioned in a previous post that it was adults-only, topless-optional. I was brave & went topless. Oh yes, I did! I was shocked myself, but let me tell you: when you’re literally the only one in sight with your top on, you feel like a prude. So I figured, “Fuck it, at least I won’t have tan lines.” It was glorious, and unusually freeing. I definitely loved the care-free, relaxed environment. The motto was, “Nobody knows you, nobody gives a shit.” Nice.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe food also was excellent, the staff was wonderful, and the drinks were amazing. Cancun was nice because we were able to venture out into town & we weren’t stranded on the resort. Unfortunately, the last 2 days were rainy & chilly, and was very glad to have my jacket! Otherwise, we enjoyed fun in the sun and I read the book “The Poisonwood Bible,” which was very good. Definitely not something I would usually read for enjoyment, but great nonetheless. I usually love James Rollins, Clive Cussler, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child…my “adventure” books as I call them.

We had our own little adventure and Jon moved one of the beds onto the balcony. It was fun. We didn’t leave it out there, but it was cool just chillin out there. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As you can tell, I didn’t bring my “nice” camera with me on the trip because it’s heavy & bulky, but I found some old gems that I never uploaded from when McKenzie was 3 from our point-and-shoot…crazy what a difference a year makes!  Such a sweetie. McKenzie had a lot of fun with her Nina (grandma) while we were gone, and it was great to be able to FaceTime with her every day. It’s funny: when you have kids it’s just as fun coming home to see your kiddos! A bonus to parenting, for sure.IMG_0002 IMG_0011 IMG_0018 IMG_0037 IMG_0038OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Annnnnnnnnnnnd I’m definitely missing that “chilly” 65˚F in Mexico…it’s 5˚F here in Wisconsin with a windchill below zero! Yuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Cuteness for Every Season

I’ve been planning a seasonal collage of McKenzie for our hallway, and I’ve got 3 out of 4 photos now! I took the winter one today since we have some fresh snow. I think it’s so fun! Maybe I’ll start doing 1 every month so I can make a calendar next year. Just thought I’d share…I can’t wait to order the 8×10’s so her adorableness can adorn our hallway. It will be super-easy to replace one every 3 or 4 months, nothing too crazy. =) Any ideas for spring? I was thinking something with Tulips maybe…? Or maybe in a puddle? I’m sorta drawing a blank…

McKenzieCollageOh. And FYI: Netflix currently has Pocahontas, The Aristocats, and Fox & the Hound! Some of my favorite kids movies (thanks for the tip Jesse)! I LOVE the songs in Pocahontas.

‘Tis the Season to be…Jolly?

Alrighty, I haven’t posted any “life updates” lately, so here’s what’s been going on with me:

  1. I’m super stoked that my tutorial “Elf on the Shelf” Mod in 6-easy Steps has gone viral on Pinterest. I had almost 1000 views here yesterday alone! That’s wayyy exciting for me. So I’ve been thinking of ways to keep that going. Suggestions welcome. ;)

Add wire, velcro, and magnets to make your Elf more pose-able.

Add wire, velcro, and magnets to make your Elf more pose-able.

  2. My amazing hubbs is graduating from UW-Madison next weekend! ((GO BADGERS, WOO!!)) We’re obviously excited. Then in March he will become active duty in the Army, and re-training will commence. Who knows where we’ll be in a year?! It’s both exciting, and somewhat stressful. It will be strange, since the Army is very different from the Marines in some ways, but I’m sure the lifestyle is similar overall. Details on this decision here, since I don’t really want to hear any more “How could you let him do that?!” questions.
  3. Since he will be active duty again, thought we could use some “alone time” before things get crazy, so I booked us a vacation to Cancun in January. We’re going to an adults-only all-inclusive for a whole week for some much-needed relaxation. I hope adult-only doesn’t translate to “swingers” because that would be really awkward. Haha. That said, I’m super excited! We’ve always stayed in the Riviera Maya, so I’ve never been to Cancun before. If anyone knows of fun stuff to do there, please share!cancun
  4. We decorated our tree! I have a particular affinity for real trees, specifically Frasier Firs. I think it’s because of the smell…it reminds me of my happy childhood Christmases, which makes sense because smell is the strongest sense linked to memory, so they say. We played Christmas music, and McKenzie had a blast helping us this year. She LOVES Christmastime, which is fun to see. IMG_7131
  5. We are having a family Christmas celebration here on the 15th, because my family will be in town for Jon’s graduation…which translates to: I have to clean the house and wrap all the gifts that are being mailed here. *sigh* I am mostly excited for the meal, which is going to be Beef Wellington (at the request of over 5 people). It’s amazing. If you are not a family of vegetarians, it is a must. Oh. My. Goodness. It’s a labor intensive recipe, but easy and delicious. And I don’t dare modify that recipe either…why mess with perfection?TU0602_Beef-Wellington_lg
  6. Cali’s tail has been a PAIN. IN. THE. ASS. Seriously. (If you are not up-to-date with story, click here for details.) The bandaging is practically impossible to keep on, due to her frantic tail-wagging whenever we come home. And then she gets nervous, because she thinks it will hurt and shakes for like 5 minutes. Poor girl. I’ve been trying to keep her cone-head off whenever we’re home, though. She gets her stitches out next Thursday (hopefully), but she has another appointment Monday for some more professional re-bandaging.
  7. I have been running 1 mile a day. This is HUGE for me. Granted, it takes me 10 or 11 minutes, but I run the whole way. Yay me! Gotta get in slightly better shape for this upcoming vacay. ;) I would love to get into running again. I LOVE running when I am into it, but it’s the “getting into it” that’s difficult. It’s so hard. [Insert whiny voice here.] But it’s worth it, right? *sigh*

So that’s pretty much what’s been going on with me. How is your December so far? Do you find the holidays stressful, magical, or a little bit of both?

Girl’s Night Out & A Birthday Weekend

The past several days have been so fun! On Thursday, I had a “Girl’s Night” with my friend Anna. We had a delicious Italian dinner and then went to the comedy club! It was a blast…and long overdue. I LOVE the comedy club. It was really fun, although I’ve seen better comedians. He was funny, but a bit of a misogynist…I mean, I can enjoy a vagina joke here and there, but seriously, his entire routine was about vaginas. (Actually, I lie, there was one joke about an uncircumsized penis looking like a snuffaluffagus. Classy.) It was entertaining, but it’s just got old after like 10 minutes. But we still had fun (in part, thanks to the 2 drink minimum)! Ha.

Then, on Friday we made the 5 hour drive to Minneapolis to visit my sister (Jessica) & her family for my niece (Abbey’s) 4th birthday party! She and McKenzie are exactly 2 months apart. We went to the Mall of America for dinner and McKenzie and Abbey went on a carousel ride. Then on Saturday we went to Abbey’s Halloween-themed dance class…McKenzie dressed up like a princess, and Abbey was a fairy. They danced and frolicked. It was so much fun to watch. *Mental note: Get McKenzie into classes of some kind.*

On Saturday afternoon we went to Jessica’s in-laws for Abbey’s party. There was an obscene amount of presents. And an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen (yum!). McKenzie got some “un-birthday” gifts. That was always a tradition in our house when I was little…because once I cried when I didn’t get any presents on my sister’s birthday. It’s like the song from Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland,” get it?…”A very merry un-birthday to you!” Anyhow, McKenzie got a walking/barking puppy, dress-up clothes, a puzzle, and a painted glass project. Fun! She loves the puppy a lot. She named it Snowball, since it’s all white.

Then on Sunday we went to their cabin. It’s always so fun! They wanted a photo session there, to which I happily obliged…although, Dan was not a willing participant (*cough, cough*), so it’s not my best work. Haha. Buuuut, I love that my sister always poses for me! She’s such a good model, and helps me get my portrait practice! I told her that when she publishes her first book, I get to take the photo for the back cover. =) Other than that, McKenzie and Abbey played in the leaves, and our dog (Logan) followed us around on the ATV. Then we drove back to Madison. Long day, but a very fun trip! I always love to watch McKenzie and Abbey play together.

Hey y’all, I learned how to curl my hair!

How sad am I? I’m 26-years-old and I’ve never known how to properly curl my hair. I always thought it wouldn’t curl because I have long, fine hair, but I found this tutorial which had some great tips!

And I recently bought a new ceramic curling iron for $19.99 (at Best Buy of all places)…it hadn’t occurred to me that my problem might be an old iron, but I was using a $10, 10-year-old iron. That probably didn’t help! My hair always went flat in minutes. Seriously. So between the new iron and the new technique, it really worked well and I was pretty pleased with the result (forgive the camera-phone pic).

In other news, there’s a lot going on in our lives right now that I’d love to discuss, but I just can’t yet. Have you ever been at a point in your life where there are SO many imminent changes, and you just don’t know where you’ll end up in 6 months? Even a year? That’s us right now.

My hubbs is graduating this December, and we originally had our hearts set on moving back to California  (Jon was stationed in Twentynine Palms, CA during his 4 years in the Marines). It’s the amazing weather! We planned on getting grown-up jobs and looking for a home and what-not, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to play out that way. And I’m being intentionally cryptic here…I’ll be happy to share our plans when they’re set in stone, but I don’t really want to jinx it right now! Big life changes though. *sigh* I wonder where we’ll be in a year! It’s both exciting and frustrating.
